The secret to success in business that most of us don’t know is setting small and realistic goals. Organizations generally think big and plan to move with big goals in their bag, but the truth is that all big successes started small.

How do you reach moon, by jumping? Well, following and achieving one small goal at a time.

The same goes when it comes to achieving success in business. You have to plan well and start small. No matter how big your goals and dreams, you need to start small. How do you start a multi-million dollars’ business? Well, you take one step at a time. You can begin by interviewing a successful business owner. There are some points that are really helpful in understanding linkage between small goals and big goals.

  • Every big success is achieved through baby steps
  • Small goals allow you to focus better on improvements
  • Small goals promote corrective action
  • They build confidence and strengthen your team
  • Small wins develop momentum and create habits

Policy making

ISO management systems have a separate clause for Policy. If you go to a good ISO consultant, they will lay their prime focus in developing a good effective policy that will help in continual improvement of ISO management system. Policies has to be framed and displayed regardless of standard i.e. ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, ISO 50001 etc all will have policies specific to them. There are some criteria’s that are needed to be considered while framing policy:

  • Appropriate to the context of the organization – This isn’t really an hint that needs to be mentioned in the policy making; rather, it is something that needs to be recalled throughout the writing of the policy.
  • Top Management commitment and continual improvement– One of the main reasons for implementing any management system is to identify the processes in order to improve them. The management policy is anticipated to include a commitment to this concept of continual improvement.
  • Compliance fulfillment– The last commitment that is needed in the policy is to comply with all legal and other requirements related to customer, environment, occupational health and safety, and you need to agree that you will meet any laws or other stipulations that relate to these.
  • Setting objectives – Objectives of the company can be set with or without the help of an ISO consultant. A framework for setting objectives has to be provided in policies. You will need to set up plans to achieve some objectives related to customer requirement, quality of products, compliances, improving your organization’s occupational health and safety, and these need to be consistent with your policy.
  • Documented information– The Policy is one of the pillar in the management system that needs to be documented. This can be in hard or soft copy, but it can’t be word of mouth.
  • Communicated to all interested parties – Interested parties need to understand what the company policy is and how their work activities correspond with the occupational health and safety hazards of the company. The policy doesn’t need to be memorized, but an employee should be able to understand what is meant and how they are involved in attaining the goal.

Objective setting

As we all know, the overarching objectives of any OH&S system are to protect the employee, prevent incidents through identification and mitigation of risk, and ensure that continual improvement can be developed from the actions of the system itself. Monitoring, measurement, analysis, and evaluation provide a strong basis for this achievement within the ISO 45001 standard in a similar way that the “Plan, Do, Check, Act” cycle underpins the ISO 9001 (quality management) and 14001 (environmental management) systems. Use this process wisely and in step with the related workings of your OH&S system and you will not only achieve your objectives, you will grow to understand them better, and that will be good news for everyone.

Leadership

Leader of the ISO management team shall assume responsibility for strategically blending of ISO management system, as the ultimate aim of any management system is to improve the performance of the organization, both in terms of business and strategy. While building EMS base a good leader shall demonstrate a high level of understanding if the issues and build management system in the strategic interest of the organization.
